Toxic Twine: How Osprey Nest Materials Are Becoming Deadly Traps
The first thing I noticed was the color.
My partner and I had spent the afternoon driving the country roads of southern Idaho with no destination beyond wherever the birds might lead us. It was one of those slow Saturdays that asks nothing of you. Windows down. Camera within reach. Miles of hay fields stretched toward distant mountains while irrigation pivots swept across the landscape in steady rhythm. Western Meadowlarks sang from fence posts. Red-tailed Hawks surveyed freshly cut fields from telephone poles. Every turn offered another reason to slow down.
Then something caught my eye.
At first it looked like strips of ribbon dancing in the wind.
Electric blue.
Neon orange.
Brilliant pink.
They fluttered high above the road from the top of a weathered utility pole, vivid against the pale summer sky. As we pulled closer, the colors blurred into an enormous osprey nest.
I could not look away.
From below, it was beautiful. Hundreds of weathered branches formed a platform nearly as wide as a small dining table. Woven throughout the sticks were strands of plastic baling twine that spilled over the rim like colorful streamers. The afternoon light caught every strand as the wind lifted them into motion.
I reached for my camera before I ever reached for my binoculars.
Only later would I learn that the same colors that drew me in could one day kill the same birds that built the nest.
Osprey have been building nests long before humans first bundled hay with plastic twine.
Found on every continent except Antarctica, Pandion haliaetus occupies one of the widest distributions of any bird of prey. Their lives revolve around water. Lakes, rivers, reservoirs, estuaries, and coastlines all provide the fish that make up nearly their entire diet. Unlike most raptors, ospreys possess specialized adaptations for catching slippery prey. Their outer toe can rotate backward, allowing two toes to face forward and two backward for a stronger grip. Tiny spines called spicules cover the bottoms of their feet, helping hold struggling fish, while dense, oily feathers shed water moments after a dive.
They are remarkably well equipped for life.
They are also remarkable architects.
Each spring, breeding pairs return to nests that may have been used for decades. Rather than beginning again, they continue building upon the previous year's foundation. A few new sticks become dozens. Dozens become hundreds. Over many seasons a single nest may exceed five feet across, four feet deep, and weigh several hundred pounds. Some have grown so large they have collapsed utility poles or broken the tops from dead trees beneath them.
Every branch is chosen for a reason.
Large sticks form the foundation.
Smaller branches strengthen the walls.
Grasses, bark, moss, and softer vegetation cushion the bowl of the nest where eggs will rest.
To an osprey, successful nesting depends on gathering materials from the surrounding landscape. Whatever is nearby becomes part of home.
Increasingly, what surrounds them is us.
Across agricultural landscapes, discarded polypropylene baling twine has become as common as fallen branches. Strong enough to secure thousands of pounds of compressed hay through months of sun, snow, and rain, the plastic is engineered to resist breaking. Even after it is discarded, it can persist in the environment for decades.
To an osprey searching from hundreds of feet above, the distinction between a natural vine and a length of orange baling twine does not exist.
Both are long.
Both are flexible.
Both are easy to carry.
Only one was designed never to fail.
Research led by raptor biologist Dr. Marco Restani along Montana's Yellowstone River has revealed how widespread this problem has become. Surveying hundreds of osprey nests over nearly a decade, his team found that approximately forty four percent contained plastic baling twine. Entanglements occurred every breeding season, most often involving nestlings whose growing bodies became caught in loops hidden beneath the nest lining.
For a young osprey, the danger often begins with curiosity.
Nestlings spend nearly two months confined to the nest while parents make countless fishing trips each day. As the chicks grow, they shuffle, stretch, flap developing wings, and compete with siblings for food. A loose loop that seemed harmless when woven into the nest weeks earlier gradually tightens around a foot or wing.
Unlike willow branches or strips of bark, polypropylene does not fray under tension.
It constricts.
Some nestlings lose circulation to their feet. Others remain trapped as parents continue feeding the nest, unable to free themselves before starvation, infection, or exposure takes its toll. Some become suspended beneath the nest while attempting their first flight. Adult birds can also become entangled while landing with fish or rearranging nesting material.
Many of these deaths occur silently, high above the ground, unseen by the people living beneath them.
That afternoon in Idaho, I knew none of this.
I only knew I had found a great photograph.
Looking through my viewfinder, the colors transformed an ordinary utility pole into something extraordinary. I thought the nest stood as a testament to adaptability. A species once devastated across much of North America by the pesticide DDT had recovered through decades of conservation, habitat protection, and cleaner environmental policy. Osprey had learned to nest alongside people, adapting to telephone poles, nesting platforms, bridges, and channel markers with astonishing success.
The photograph seemed to celebrate that adaptability.
Only later did I recognize another story woven into the same frame.
Wildlife adapts because it must.
Adaptation, however, is not the same as thriving.
The baling twine inside this nest is not evidence that osprey have embraced human materials. It is evidence that our materials have become impossible to avoid.
That realization changed the photograph for me.
I no longer saw vibrant ribbons decorating a nest.
I saw remnants of hay fields becoming part of a bird's architecture.
I saw an object designed for agriculture entering an entirely different ecosystem.
I saw a photograph that asked a question rather than providing an answer.
How often do we mistake adaptation for harmony?
Conservation is rarely defined by dramatic moments. More often it unfolds through ordinary decisions repeated thousands of times. A length of plastic twine left beside a field. A hay bale cut open without collecting its bindings. A material engineered for durability becoming permanent in a landscape where nothing else was meant to last so long.
The osprey does not know the difference.
It gathers what the landscape provides.
Perhaps that is why this photograph continues to stay with me.
At first glance, it is a portrait of color.
Look a little longer, and it becomes a portrait of our relationship with the natural world.
Not because the bird failed to adapt.
But because it adapted exactly as evolution taught it to.
The landscape is what changed.
